2016 saw my first ever visit to Gdańsk and I ended up spending 5 blissful months in the coastal city, staying in three hostels, 1 hotel, 1 homestay and 2 flats in that time. So far I reviewed the excellent Ibis Hotel and the Hostel Cycle On, where I famously cycled with Taiwnese travel writer and pin up girl, Mika on the Road. Stories of that time of my life will come in due course. The last hostel I stayed in was the 4Friends Hostel, which is on the Stare Miasto side of the river. Towards the end of my time in Gdańsk, I based myself in the trendy and extremely clean 4Friends Hostel.
I booked myself into a lovely 4-bed male dorm with a window view over the river by Gdańsk harbour, and some of my friends were visiting me from Bournemouth. If you are coming to Gdańsk soon, here are 4reasons to stay at 4Friends Hostel. It’s one of three hostels I recommend in the city by the way – I stayed at two others, I just want people to visit Gdańsk.
1.Stare Miasto Location
Located on Ulica Długie Pobrzeże overlooking the river in Gdańsk, this hostel is a prime location for all the sightseeing you will want to do. The Stare Miasto is the Old Town of Gdańsk and 4Friends is here in the heart of it. It’s a simply stunning place even if you only have a few days here, rather than my 5months (and counting, as I often return for writing projects to nearby Gdynia and Sopot).
You are only a few minutes walk from The Crane, Neptune’s Fountain, Old Town Square and indeed the Post Office where the Second World War began. As a long term backpacker, there can’t get much better locations to be based here, truly.
2.Top Floor Common Room
I loved the top floor common room at 4Friends Hostel. It has stunning views over the town and is cosy. You can read and cook here. There is also a computer with internet and a TV. There is a library, cosy sofas and tea and coffee is free. The kitchen has a fridge and you can cook your own food here.
3.Clean Rooms and Bathrooms
It’s a fairly new hostel, so the place is so clean. My room was pristinely clean and the bathrooms were all incredibly modern and impeccable. I was in a 4 bed dorm (room 5) and had 2 great nights sleep here. WiFi works throughout the building and each bed has a personal locker which comes with a key.
4.New Friends at the 4Friends
It is quite a cosy hostel based on 5 floors and due to the small common room and dorms, you will find it easy to make new friends here. I roomed with some guys from Hungary and Slovakia and I also met the staff from Poland and Ukraine. I wrote about my top 20 bars in Gdansk, worth checking them all out.
Overall, Gdańsk is a liveable city for any backpacker and the amount of people you can meet here who are interested in new friends is high. You might also have read that I did a cycling tour with Hostel Cycle On, I toured the Wall Murals of Zaspa and I did a pub crawl.
